New Castle Career Center’s Health Science Education HSE has a long history of preparing students for careers in healthcare. Many graduates bring their talents and knowledge to Henry Community Health (HCH), serving the community where their friends and family live.
Allie Graham, PT
Allie Graham currently serves as a physical therapist in HCH’s Rehab Department, but her first experiences in the clinical setting happened through the HSE program. Her love for helping others improve their overall quality of life was a driving factor in her career choice.
“The Career Center’s HSE program allowed me to work in various settings (nursing homes, outpatient, hospital, home health, and pediatrics) and gave me a better idea of where I wanted to focus my education,” Graham noted.
After high school graduation, she completed her Bachelor’s degree and a three-year post-graduate program. She encourages high school students to keep an open mind when it comes to their futures.
“In high school, I was very set on a path of athletic training to physical therapy with a certification in sports,” she recalled. “My love for PT has completely shifted gears and I am now very passionate about pelvic health, treating bowel/bladder dysfunction, pregnancy pains, and postnatal care.”
Noah Dale, RN
It didn’t take Noah Dale long to decide what he wanted to do with his career. After attending the HSE program at the New Castle Career Center in his senior year, he started working at Henry Community Health immediately after graduation.
“I have always enjoyed helping people every chance I could. My sister attended the Career Center, and she told me I needed to take this program,” Dale explained. “The Career Center helped me obtain my Basic Life Support certification, allowed me to obtain my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and helped me gain knowledge to pursue a career in nursing. With these qualifications, I was able to pursue a job in the ER directly after high school and I have been working in this department since.”
Dale loves his work at the hospital and attended Indiana University East to get his Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. He tells current students not to be intimidated by the opportunities in front of them: “At 17 years old, applying for a job in an Emergency Department scared me a little bit. Now looking back, it wasn’t all that scary! Just don’t be afraid to reach out and take that extra step to better yourself.”
Madison Garreth, PA
Madison Garreth credits the Career Center’s HSE program for allowing her to see the broad base of options for a career in health sciences. While pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Ball State, Garreth job shadowed different healthcare professionals which ultimately led her to decide to become a Physician Assistant.
“I am someone who always enjoys learning about new information and skills which makes a career in health sciences a perfect fit,” Garreth shared.
After graduating from Ball State, she took a “gap year” and worked as a patient care tech at Henry Community Health, which helped her get the experience she needed to land a spot in a good PA program. After earning her Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Ohio Dominican University, she is now a Physician Assistant in Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Community Health.
“As a PA in orthopedic surgery, I evaluate and treat patients in the clinic as well as assist the surgeon with procedures in the operating room,” she explained. “The Career Center played a big role in preparing me for what I am doing now. It not only gave me a great basis of medical knowledge which I still use today, but it also allowed me to see all the various careers in health care and how they work together including doctors, PAs, PTs, OTs, social workers, therapists, and many more.”
She advises students to start considering their options early and learn about as many career paths as possible. This allows for time to explore options and figure out the best fit. She also adds: “Work hard, stay positive, and do your best every day and you can do anything you want to do.” Allie, Noah, and Madison are just three of the extensive number of graduates working at Henry Community Health who got their start in the HSE program.
