Education Program Students Excel at Conference

Learning. Competition. Networking. The annual Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) conference offers this and more to Education Program students from the New Castle Career Center. Twenty-seven students attended this year’s Indiana FCCLA State Leadership Conference at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie.

Projects Earn Awards At Conference

This year's Education Careers interns all completed a Power of One project. Power of One is a five-unit national program that helps students set and reach personal goals. All students also completed a state project. For most interns, this was Lesson Planning, which involves designing and teaching a lesson and creating a portfolio. Some students chose to create a detailed overview of FCCLA while others crafted a lesson plan about nutritious eating.

Ten chapter members participated in STAR events, which can qualify a chapter member for nationals. First-year participants included Hannah Miller, Kahlyn Jarboe, Kylee Lutes, Olivia Frombly, and Makayla Flynn, while second-year students were Rylee Miller, Bailey Stearns, Jadah Sleet, Isabella Mattingly, and Ashton Jones. Rylee Miller and Hannah Miller qualified fornationals in Orlando, Florida, with Kahlyn Jarboe as a national alternate.

Students Earn Ultimate Leadership Degree

Education Professions Instructor Melynda Huckeby expressed pride in the nine students who earned the Ultimate Leadership Degree. This award requires students to complete a state project, Power of One, compete in a STAR event, and serve as chapter officers and/or committee chairs. Rylee Miller, Hannah Miller, Jadah Sleet, Kahlyn Jarboe, Kylee Lutes, Olivia Frombly, Ashton Jones, Bailey Stearns, and Makayla Flynn received the Ultimate Leadership Degree this year.

“FCCLA hosts an impressive event,” said Huckeby. “There were numerous breakout sessions of various topics for students to attend. There was also a college fair, an interactive ‘game show,’ and a dance.” Students also enjoyed socializing, meeting members from other chapters, and visiting the local coffee shop during downtime.

FCCLA Students Develop Skills for Future Careers

FCCLA helps students develop the skills needed to have successful future families, careers, and communities. The projects the students completed are connected to the career pathway of the New Castle Career Center program. Students could apply their acquired knowledge of lesson planning, child development, nutrition and wellness, teaching strategies, and more. Huckeby added, “It's important to thank our parents, mentoring teachers, and community partners. Parents have been very supportive of the program in all capacities. We could not attend our state conference without their support. We'd also like to thank Alpha Delta Kappa for their donation. Finally, we thank the mentoring teachers who welcome interns daily in their classrooms. This program would not be possible without them.”
