Head Start Your Education

By Mackenzie Jackson,

The New Castle Career Center (NCCC) offers a variety of programs to help students prepare for their future career paths. Some programs allow students to graduate from high school and immediately jump into a career. Other programs give students the foundational instruction needed to continue an educational journey within that job realm.

Kaleb Gillock, former NCCC broadcasting student, continued his education at Indiana University East where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications.  While at IU East, he received a scholarship to serve as a play-by-play broadcaster for their athletic department. Due to Gillock’s experience in the broadcasting program, he was offered an internship with WISH-TV as a sports broadcaster.

“The broadcasting industry is one where experience and networking are two of your most valuable tools,” Gillock explained. “Mr. York (NCCC Broadcasting Instructor) was always sure to assist us in both areas, and I loved every minute of the program.”

After earning his degree, Gillock continued his career and became a sports director and anchor for KIMT-TV in Minnesota. It is his responsibility to ensure the station is covering local high school, collegiate, and professional sports in Minnesota and Iowa.

Jakob Schull, previous computer operations student, decided to both work and attend school. Currently serving as the go-to technician for six of the school buildings in the New Castle School Corporation, he also attends Ivy Tech for Network Infrastructure Engineering.

“By providing me with knowledge and training, the program brought several internships to my attention- one later becoming my current position,” Schull noted. “Repairing old and broken computers has always been a hobby of mine. I love that I was able to turn my hobby into a career.”

By participating in the Career Center programs, students are given the tools and education they need to be successful post-graduation. Whether that means they attend college or enter the workforce directly- the programs assist in all areas.

“The beauty of the New Castle Career Center is it gives you the opportunity to try a career that interests you,” Gillock added. “I hope someday I will be able to come back and provide to students what NCCC provided for me.”

Application Deadline for Career Center Quickly Approaching

By alycia turner,

Time is running out for incoming juniors and seniors to apply for a New Castle Career Center program or Early College for the 2020-21 school year. By participating in either of these options, students can gain insight to their future careers, accumulate college credits, and experience what college will entail.

The New Castle Career Center offers 17 different programs for students to participate in ranging from education careers to welding. Students can explore careers, develop skills, and gain on-the-job experience. By participating in these programs, students can get a head start in the job market or decide how best to focus as they move toward the future.

“The Education Careers program has been so beneficial and a great way to gain hands-on experience,” noted Zoe Conway, New Castle Career Center and New Castle High School student. “The education program has grown my love for teaching and ensured my decision that teaching is the career for me!”

The Early College program is offered at the New Castle Ivy Tech campus for incoming seniors. Within this program, students will participate in four college courses: Anatomy, Art Appreciation, English, Psychology, and Public Speaking. These courses are prerequisites for most undergraduate degrees, giving participants 12 credits towards their desired degree.

“The Early College program has been one of the most helpful things in preparing me for what attending Ball State will entail,” explained Brooklyn LaMar, Early College and Hagerstown High School student. “Through the program, I’ve gained better time management, new perspectives by meeting new students, and gotten a taste of what college professors will expect of me.”

If students would like to participate in a career program or the Early College program, applications are due February 21. Applications can be accessed at each home schools counselor’s office or by visiting nccareercenter.org
