Career Programs Give Real-World Experience

By Mackenzie Jackson,

As Brittany Nicholson finished high school in 2013, she had one thing many of her classmates did not: confidence in her career path. Nicholson completed one year of the Veterinary Science Program at the New Castle Career Center (NCCC), which gives students the opportunity to earn college credits as well as graduate with a Veterinary Assisting Certification.

She continued her education at Purdue University to study Animal Science. Upon receiving her undergrad in 2017, she began pursuing her doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. She will graduate in May 2021 and become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

“After finishing up my doctorate degree, I plan to go into small animal private practice,” Nicholson explained. “Most likely I will work in the Henry County area.”

Because of her Career Center experience in high school, Nicholson was able to easily decide on a career path she knew she already loved. Not only was she able to visit local veterinary offices, but she also gained basic skills and made connections with several veterinarians.

Nicholson urges any sophomore interested in a career program to take the opportunity to try it: “Not only do students receive real-world experience, but they also find out if their projected career path is the right fit for them,” she shared. “NCCC can have a lasting impression on their future career choice.”

The NCCC offers a variety of programs, some of which provide students the ability to be work-ready upon graduation, while others give students the foundational instruction to excel in college or trade school.

“I would like to thank Mrs. Warner for being an amazing mentor, resource, teacher, and friend throughout my career,” added Nicholson. “She has supported me and kept in touch over the years since I graduated. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take her class and it has definitely had a major impact on my journey to becoming a veterinarian.”

National Technical Honor Society Celebrates Students

By Mackenzie Jackson,

For the 2020-21 school year, the New Castle Career Center (NCCC) will be inducting 172 students into the National Technical Honor Society. Of those students, 30 are second-year senior inductees and 142 are first-year inductees. The requirements to be inducted include standards set forth by the National Technical Honor Society and NCCC.

Requirements to be inducted include:

  • Students must be recommended for membership by their career program teacher.
  • Students must have a B+ average in their career program.
  • Students must maintain a B average at their home school.
  • All students must obtain a 95% or better attendance record in their career program.

After grades, attendance, and community service requirements have been noted, home school counselors are asked to verify that each student exemplifies the standards of the National Technical Honor Society. These standards are skill, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

The NCCC National Technical Honor Society program had to be modified for the 2021 inductees. The National Technical Honor Society Leaders created a plan to safely celebrate the students being recognized for their achievements by live streaming the ceremony.
